The Ticketing and Consignment Island put into use on April 2 is China’s first airport modification project that stops no flights. Delivered by the Shanghai Construction Group’s (SCG) General Contract Department, the revamp of the airport’s T1 terminal enhances its annual passenger handling capacity from 20 million to 36.8 million.
SCG innovates on construction techniques and management expertise to create the first case of “non-flight-suspension construction” on airport terminal.
Specifically, the construction includes two parts: newly-built areas and make-over. It covers a total floor space of 116,000 square meters. The newly-built areas cover 68,000 square meters and are located between the main building and the boarding corridor including the ground floor and 6 over ground floors. The make-over part is in the main building, the gallery and the corridor with 48,000 square meters of space.
It’s learned the China Eastern Airlines and the SkyTeam Alliance’s annual passenger throughput at the airport’s T1 terminal is expected to reach 29.9 million in 2015 and climb to 36.8 million in the long run (the T2 terminal is supposed to have 40 million), rendering it imperative to revamp the terminal building.
